Fort Ancient makes a wonderful “Mystery” tour for adult and student group markets. Fort Ancient offers a step on guide who will greet the guests and make them feel welcome and will share the current site interpretations of both the archaeological and American Indian communities. Indoor interpretation depends upon the amount of time available, but it is important for the guest to experience the grounds as the motor
coach drives through the grounds, highlighting the 18,000 feet of earthen walls. The gift shop at Fort Ancient offers a variety of American Indian themed crafts and reference books.
Tour group admission: $5.00 per adult, free admission for the tour group leader and motor coach driver. The type of program will depend upon the amount of time the group has for their visit. The opportunities are listed below.
1 Hour: Ideal for groups who do not want to walk extensively, the one hour tour includes a 30 minute presentation in the indoor classroom, where your guide will talk about the shape, size and history of Fort Ancient. For the remainder of the tour, visitors explore the Museum and the Museum Store at their leisure.
1 ½ Hours: Guests will be guided through the 9,000 square foot exhibit space at the Fort Ancient Museum over a 45 minute period. A guide will discuss the prehistory of the Ohio Valley as they walk through three main technological themes: The First Ohioans, Tillers of the Soil, and When Worlds Collide. After the Museum tour has ended, guests will be able to spend time in the Museum Store. Then visitors will experience a guided motor coach tour through the grounds. It is here that the greater detail of the archaeological history of Fort Ancient will be shared. Near the end of the tour, guests have the unique opportunity to walk to the North Overlook (approximately 100 yards) and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Little Miami River valley that spans 3.5 miles in the distance.
2 Hours: This option includes everything from the 1 ½ hour program, plus a hands-on session where visitors will learn how to throw a spear with a tool called an atlatl.
